Events

Why produce events?

Picture
Our performance events extended an invitation to young people and artists in our local community to showcase their art, giving dozens of opportunities to singers, song-writers, rappers, musicians, poets, painters, illustrators and many more creative individuals to share their craft.

In the past, our themed events have tackled the issue of safe spaces for artists from minorities; through all of our events we aim to allow people for their voice to be heard in a space of like-minded individuals from all aspects of society. We now apply these focused ideas in our Bring Me In series, while SKFEST and our guest programming slots at venues across London allow us to create spaces for emerging artists to access professional performance environments.

Our naturally diverse programme ("diverse" in the purest sense of the word) attracts a socially and culturally diverse audience as a result;
we hope to expose as many people as we can to demonstrate how inspiring the arts can be and to truly make it for everyone.

ART IN THE GARDEN
June 2015 + July 2016

Our first outdoor event was Art in the Garden in June 2015. We kicked off summer in the unique atmosphere of the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden in the heart of east London where we had singers, rappers, musicians, poets and painters showcase their work and display their craft. With guests totalling over 250 people, there was something for everyone, as well as a barbecue going throughout the night! The acts that we had were incredible and it was a brilliant chance for people to network and socialise and just enjoy a good night out. We had a great night and we thank The S+K Team and all of our other volunteers on the night for your support - we couldn't have done it without you!

As part of our two day festival #SKFEST we produced our second instalment of Art in the Garden at Dalston Eastern Curve Garden. We curated an incredible blend of singers, rappers and poets for the greatest audial experience of the summer! Once again it was a brilliant evening celebrating the broad range of artists the UK's capital has to offer, including a melodic house band and delicious food served by Head Chef of Theatre Royale Stratford, Daniel Thorpe.

Artists featured on the night included poets Ayo Wrote, Caleb Femi and Rara, as well as singers Cari, Jas, Latir and Omar TKIF, with our rappers wrapping up the night SNE and Ms Banks. If you weren't lucky enough to make it down and catch the wonderful Jumi hosting, relive the vibes through photos captured by Alfie Williams.

DECONSTRUCTING BLACKNESS
NOVEMBER 2015

Picture
November 2015 saw us host our second performance event, Deconstructing Blackness, at our new home at Hackney Showroom.

Throughout October and November, The S+K Project worked with young people up to 18 years old, breaking down what it means to be black, past and present, and creating work out of this theme through our talks and workshops. Our event on the 23rd November celebrated that work whilst also having some of the most talented and ground-breaking black performance and visual artists around showcase their talent, highlighting the success of black people in the arts.

With performances from Latir, Nia Ekanem, DYLEMA, Ruth-Ellen, Jolade + more, it was an evening full of incredible talent, delicious food and good vibes!

HEAR COME
THE GIRLS

March 2016

Picture
Hear Come The Girls in March 2016 at Hackney Showroom was programmed as part of their Alt Fem women's festival.

In a world where the opinions of women, especially Women of Colour, are often silenced or overlooked, more of an effort is needed globally to ensure every voice is heard and our event did exactly that! We organised an evening of thought-provoking poetry, spoken word and music featuring women writers of colour performing pieces on topics chosen by you!

Our intimate night, hosted by the incredible Just Jumi, featured artists: Miss Jacqui, Delicia, Bow Promise, Poetic Jemz, Diamantina and You & Me and was headlined by the talents of Samuel King and Tolu Agbelusi. Many congratulations to the winner of our competition writer and poet Rara and thank you to all of the artists that took part - we see great things for these inspirational Women of Colour!
