This unapologetic attitude is intrinsic in all of our work, including the various events that we programme and produce. Our events strive to showcase the talent of the many unheard voices in our local community. More than anything, the S+K Presents stand of our work hopes to bring people together and is often an entry point for individuals to explore the opportunities within performing arts.
We currently run regular networking events for people of colour, produce themed one-off events and annually curate the interdisciplinary micro-festival SKFEST. In September 2018, we will be launching a new series of bi-monthly events at Bernie Grant Arts Centre, focusing on testing ideas, developing new writing and being a hub for creatives (and their ideas) to flourish. The future looks bright for S+K. As well as developing our existing programme of artistic work, we'll be relaunching our writer's development programme (yes, the very same one that birthed VOID), as well as launching a brand new series of events that allow for a safe space for artists to test new ideas and receive feedback in a quirky space in north London.
Our Creative Learning programme has plans to extend south of the river in September 2018, as well as launching a brand new Young Theatre Makers programme in collaboration with People's Palace Projects for young people aged 18-25 looking for an entry point into the arts. |
Our aim is simple: to make the arts for everyone.
We believe that the creative sector– and theatre in particular – needs to accurately represent contemporary society, both on and off stage. From the boards of organisations right down to the front of house staff, theatre builds have a duty to be representative in order to engage audiences from all walks of life. Theatre is not for the elite, but for all; the way in which we create and present work highlights this. We often work collaboratively within the company and externally with artists and makers to write and devise plays. We strive to create and showcase boundary-pushing original work that enables us to be at the helm of our own stories so we can shape our own narratives, not have them projected onto us. We take pride in the fact that all the work under the S+K Stage umbrella has been and remains authentically us; we do not subscribe to notions of what "black theatre" should be – we make what we want, when we want, how we want. Our extensive Creative Learning programme enables us to work with a broad range of people at varying levels of experience. Our dedicated Participation Manager + Coordinator, along with our team of freelance facilitators, thoroughly plan, deliver and evaluate one-off workshops, short-term and long-term projects in areas typically deprived of arts and culture.
It is outrageous for an arts organisation to have the assumption that people will come to them if they are running a project. Our grassroots Creative Learning team work hard in areas and scenarios many others find challenging; we understand that often these are the groups that benefit from the arts most so we work with local communities to ensure that we deliver projects that are relevant and beneficial to them. We believe that we bridge the gap between the emerging and the established, and we upskill our participants both artistically and personally – using the worlds of theatre, movement, performance poetry and creative writing as a catalyst for this. |
